New Windshield FAQs

If you are looking for a new windshield or trying to decide if you need a windshield repair or replacement, our team is here to help! Today, we’re answering frequently asked questions all related to new windshields and the process of getting this service completed.

How Much is a New Windshield?

New windshield costs can depend on the make/model of the vehicle, as well as geographic location and service cost. On average, the cost of a new windshield replacement can range from $200-$450, with an additional cost for labor. If you have a premium insurance plan that covers the cost of a new windshield replacement, it is well worth your time to file a claim and have the insurance company take care of the cost of your new windshield.

What Type of Glass is Used in New Windshields?

Windshields are made from laminated safety glass, which consists of one layer of plastic sandwiched by two layers of auto glass, sealed and bonded together. This type of glass has to be shaped and bent in a very precise way to fit the vehicle’s frame and ensure structural integrity.

Do I Need an OEM or OEE Windshield?

The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) windshield is defined as the same windshield made specifically for your car– essentially, your original windshield auto glass. The Original Equipment Equivalent (OEE) is defined as a windshield that meets the same standards as your OEM but is manufactured by a different auto glass company. While both windshields are held by the same safety standards, most auto glass technicians would recommend replacing your windshield with the OEM windshield if you are able, as they hold warranty and credibility.

How Do You Know If You Need a New Windshield?

A small chip or crack is more than likely able to be repaired. However, if the crack begins to spread and goes past 6 inches in length, a windshield replacement will be required.

As long as the crack is out of the driver’s line of sight and if all local laws and regulations are followed, you are able to drive with the crack for a very short period of time, allowing you to find the right new windshield replacement and service station.
