Do You Need Windshield Repair or Replacement? A1 Windshield Helps You Decide

It may start as a tiny chip you didn’t realize you had, and then one particularly cold day a tiny crack forms. It may seem like a small thing, but even the tiniest crack in a windshield should not be ignored because it will continue to get worse.

The big question though, is this crack fixable, or will repairing it require an entirely new windshield? A1 Windshield Repair can explain when a windshield crack can be repaired, or when it needs replacement.

When It Can Be Repaired

If the chip in your windshield is small and just remains a chip, it can likely be repaired fairly easily. A chip over time though will likely expand if it is not repaired quickly because it will create a weak spot in the glass. Anything from a large bump to cold weather could cause a crack to form from the weak spot.

If the crack in your windshield is small, no more than a couple of inches, and is below the driver’s line of sight, it can probably be repaired. Keep in mind that a repair is often not a permanent fix, and will just likely buy you more time before you need it fully replaced.

How is a Crack Repaired?

Usually, in a windshield repair, resin is inserted into the chips or cracks to help seal them and keep them from spreading. Windshield repairs are fairly quick, and are often covered by insurance. Windshield repairs are cheaper than replacing the whole windshield.

Windshield repairs should only be done by a professional, because an improperly repaired windshield may not hold up, and you may end up spending more to have it fixed or replaced.

When is a Windshield Replacement Necessary?

There are times when the windshield damage is too extensive for repair. If the crack in your windshield is longer than 6 inches, or there are multiple cracks, it will likely need to be repaired.

The location of the crack is also important because if it is more than 3 inches up from the bottom, or blocking the driver’s line of sight, it has to be replaced. It is good to know the laws of your state because in many states it is illegal to drive with a crack in the windshield that is anywhere that may affect the driver’s view of the road.
